The Essences
Six forces. Three sides at war.

Everything in Arc comes from six Essences: Light, Life, Shadow, Order, Chaos and Death. Some of them sound like opposites, and some of them are. But they all flow from the same source, the Primordial Essence. What that is, nobody can tell you. Most people don't ask.
Light
Light is purity, hope and protection. You find it in small things: the first sun after a long night, a candle left in a window, a guard who stays at his post when everyone else has gone home. It's the bright force that helps people see clearly. Most people like it. It's hard to argue with the sun.
Life
Life is growth and harmony. It's the moss on the castle walls, the weeds between the cobblestones, and the forest that slowly takes back every road nobody uses. It nurtures things and makes them grow back, again and again, whether you want them to or not.
Shadow
Shadow is mystery and silence. It's the hush in an empty hallway, the secret nobody says out loud, the corner of the map nobody ever filled in. It looks for what others missed, and it changes whatever it touches. Don't expect a straight answer from it.
Order
Order is logic, structure and control. It's in roads that run straight, city gates that close at sundown, and rules written down so nobody can argue about them later. It shapes things, guides them and keeps the balance. If something is out of place, Order has already noticed.
Chaos
Chaos is passion, freedom and change. It's the storm that tears the roof off, the fire roaring in the forge, the moment somebody says "let's just try it". It breaks things open and sets them alight, so that something new can start. It doesn't ask first.
Death
Death is decay and endings. It's the leaves falling in autumn, the rust on an old sword, the house nobody lives in anymore. It sounds grim, but it's also what makes room for whatever comes next. Nobody said it was subtle.
The war
Order and Chaos have hated each other for so long that nobody remembers why. Ask one side and you'll get a story. Ask the other and you'll get a different one. Life has its own as well. The three stories don't match, and nobody knows which one is true.
Today all three are at open war, each against the other two. They live mixed across Arc, each with regions of its own, but the borders move every time someone wins a battle. Maps go out of date fast.
You can change currents, but people rarely do. Your own side will call it treason, and they have long memories.
